Hoosac Tunnel

Hoosac Tunnel – East portal located in Florida, MA. This is what it looked like in August of 2008. It has a very interesting history. Here are a few facts I’ve taken from Wikipedia. The tunnel is 4.75 miles long with the East portal located in Florida, MA and the West portal in North Adams, MA. Work began in 1848 and finished in 1875 for a cost of $21,000,000. It was nicknamed “The Great Bore” and 193 workers lost their lives during construction. The first train went through on February 9, 1875. It was the longest tunnel in North American until the completion of the Moffat Tunnel in 1928, and remains the longest transportation tunnel east of the Rocky Mountains.
